Singing Bowls and Mallets


Singing bowls are a basic part of any well man or woman's tool kit. This essential aid has been used for thousands of years. Singing bowls were used by early man to detect the pitch and duration of their voice, as well as to determine the length of the day. Today, they still play a similar role in our society. As man becomes more advanced in technology, the design of the modern singing bowl has continued to evolve with time, while maintaining the fundamental elements of the traditional one.

A standing bowl or hanging bowl is an inverted pyramid, usually supported at the top by a rim, with the rest of it flat on the ground. These bowls were originally called Tibetan bowls, though this name is now commonly used. Such bowls do in fact still exist today, in a widespread variety, ranging in size from a few centimeters to a meter in diameter.

Today's bowls are typically made from a combination of materials. One of the most common is that of metal, although there are still instances when a bowl made from pure metal is made. Generally, the materials which are used in making today's singing bowls are either acrylic or plastic. Acrylic is the most common, as its malleability makes it easy to create the most intricate designs. Plastic, on the other hand, is a fairly light metal, which is not easily moulded into certain shapes. In addition to combining different metals to produce unique musical creations, bowl makers have also been known to blend metals to create different effects. For example, one of the most widely known combining metals is copper. Though this metal is generally found in bird cages for domestic birds and drinking cups for waterfowl, it is also used to make musical bowls made of copper. These bowls are typically large, and can be found displayed on walls as art.

The method by which music is made in a singing bowl appears to come directly from the physics of sound. Sound waves travel through the air at the speed of the vibration of air molecules. A singing bowl vibrates in much the same way as an air atom does. The difference is that while an air atom makes only a single vibration per cycle of the vibrating process, each of the bowls components vibrates multiple times, sending out varying amounts of sound. This combination of multiple vibrations results in a continual, soothing tone, rather than the sharp, booming sound created by a metal whistle.

Different types of mallets have been used to create music. The traditional metal mallet is shaped like a hammer or another type of mallet. Modern makers have developed hollow-bodied mallets with two hollow sides, much like a flute's bell. This hollowing allows the "flute" to create the same kind of sound as a singing bowl.
